Car on the Tizi n'Tichka mountain road in the High Atlas

Quick answer: Marrakech to Merzouga by car is about 560 km. The usual route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) on the N9 to Ouarzazate, follows the N10 through the Dades and Todra valleys to Erfoud, then the N13 to Merzouga. Pure driving time is about 9–10 hours, so most travellers split the trip over 2 days. The whole route is paved: a normal car is enough.

Driving from Marrakech to the Sahara is one of the great road trips of North Africa: snowy peaks, kasbahs, palm valleys and finally the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. This guide gives you the route leg by leg, a practical 2-day plan and the tips our team shares with every customer heading south.

About Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes

Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of dunes about 28 km long that rises up to around 150 m above the surrounding rocky desert. Hotels and desert camps line the dunes. From Merzouga, you can book a camel trek at sunset, a night in a desert camp or a guided 4x4 tour.

Safety tips for the desert road

  1. Do not drive at night on this route: little lighting, animals on the road.
  2. On the Tichka pass, drive slowly on the bends and let faster cars pass.
  3. In winter (December–February), ice or snow can close the pass for a few hours. Check conditions before leaving.
  4. In summer, temperatures near the desert are extreme: drive in the morning, carry water and keep the air conditioning on.
  5. Stay on paved roads. To go into the dunes, leave the car at your hotel and book a local guide.
